As a defensive back, Matt Ilalio of Anchorage is sometimes put on an island for the Sacred Heart University football team.

Going one-on-one with receivers is a sink or swim situation, but the coaches trust the 5-foot-9 senior enough to put him in that position.

Ilalio buoyed Sacred Heart’s defensive effort in a 38-24 victory over Lafayette College during FCS action in Easton, Pennsylvania.

He made six solo tackles and three pass breakups and played a huge role in helping Sacred Heart shut out Lafayette in the third quarter.

He almost single-handedly forced the Leopards to go three-and-out on their first drive of the second half after they twice targeted Ilalio on pass plays that he denied.

On the following drive he made back-to-back tackles, including a 2-yard loss, that eventually led to a turnover on downs.

Ilalio, of Service High fame, basically matched his season stats from last season of seven tackles and one pass breakup in six games.

The six tackles were the second most for Ilalio in 26 career games.
