California Baptist University has boasted the best cross-country running program in the Pacific West Conference since 2011.

In those six years, the men have won six conference titles while the women have won four.

Runners come and go, but the consistent factor has been coach Ben Gall of Anchorage.

Gall, of East High fame, is in his seventh season at the helm of the men’s and women’s teams at the NCAA D2 school in Riverside, California.

The six-time Pac West Coach of the Year led both teams to the national championships last year and both teams are nationally ranked this year, with the women at No. 6 and the men at No. 9.

Over the weekend, the Cal Baptist women upset the Nos. 1 and 4 teams to win the Lewis Conference Crossover meet in Chicago, Illinois.

“This win today means a lot to us for sure,” Gall told the school’s website. “Beating two teams that hardly lose in Grand Valley State and Hillsdale is huge for us, it was definitely an exciting moment.”

Gall is one of at least four Alaskans coaching college programs in the Lower 48.
Others include Ben Welch of Wasilla at Eastern Oregon, David Morris of Chugiak at Carroll College and Matt Morris of Fairbanks at Colorado State Pueblo.
