Already the best goaltender in the Big Ten, University of Minnesota’s Eric Schierhorn of Anchorage is also one of the finest in the country.

The two-time Big Ten Conference Goaltender of the Year was among 20 goalies named to the watch list for the Mike Richter Award, which honors the most outstanding goaltender in NCAA Division I men’s hockey each season.

He was nominated for the award two years ago, just one of four freshman to be considered for the award.

His 23 wins, five shutouts and 984 saves were most among Big Ten goaltenders last season. The then-sophomore also posted career bests for save percentage (.908) and goals against average (2.61).

In tonight’s season opener, Schierhorn turned aside 40 shots but Minnesota suffered a 4-3 overtime loss to Minnesota Duluth at the Ice Breaker Tournament.

It was Schierhorn’s 76 consecutive start, which moved him into a tie for 10th all-time in NCAA history for consecutive starts.

He’s now just two shy of the Minnesota school record.
