As a new franchise in the Canadian Women’s Hockey League, the Kunlun Red Stars are looking for leadership on and off the ice.

Anchorage’s Zoe Hickel has provided both.

The 25-year-old veteran forward has provided the new franchise with points and penalty-free minutes to fuel a competitive start.

Hickel has racked up five assists in the first seven games for the Red Stars, who have won three of seven games and are tied for third in the league with 18 goals.

The former University of Minnesota Duluth Bulldog ranks second on Kunlun with five points.

She’s also one the fewest penalized players on her team, receiving only one two-minute trip to the box.

Hickel joined the CWHL after two seasons in the National Women’s Hockey League.

She was an all-star in 2016 with the Boston Pride and helped the team win the league’s inaugural Isobel Cup before being traded to the Connecticut Whale.

In 38 career games in the NWHL, she collected 9-11—20 totals.
