Anchorage’s Da’Zhon Wyche had no idea how much he loved basketball until it was taken away.

Ruled ineligible for the first semester at Laramie County Community College, the sophomore starter missed the first half of the season and his presence was missed by the Golden Eagles.

The team went 8-8 without last season’s leading scorer.

“Being out showed me a bigger picture,” Wyche told me. “That for any reason, basketball could be over for me at any time, so I have to set my life up now while I can.”

The former Alaska player of the year is back on the court for Laramie County and he’s playing like a man making up for lost time.

The 5-foot-8 guard has played three games and averaged 24.7 points and 7.0 assists to lead his team to a 2-1 record.

Wyche, of West High fame, has been especially effective from 3-point land, draining 17-of-31 shots for a staggering .548 percentage.

“It feels good to be back,” he said. “Appreciate it way more. Didn’t think that was possible, but I was proven wrong. Definitely lesson learned.”
