Before heading off to school at the University of Texas, Kamaka Hepa of Utqiagvik will intern this summer with USA Basketball.

The 6-foot-9 forward has been named the men’s U18 national team that will represent the red, white and blue at next week’s FIBA Americas U18
Championship in Ontario, Canada.

Hepa, of Barrow High fame, was one of just 12 players named to the team.

The three-time Gatorade state player of the year in Alaska and Oregon finished his high school career at Jefferson in Portland, Oregon. He played in the state title game all four years of high school, winning two with Barrow and one with Jefferson.

He also reached the final as a senior with Jefferson and averaged 16.5 points, 10.4 rebounds, 6.2 blocks and 3.5 assists per game.

Hepa will be the second Alaskan in three years to play for the U18 national team as University of Oregon all-conference forward Ruthy Hebard of Fairbanks played for the women’s team at the 2016 women’s FIBA Americas U18 Championship.

The American men have won five straight gold medals at the Americas Championship.
