As Alaska’s only professional baseball player presently on the field, Jonny Homza of Anchorage has a lot riding on his performance as he represents an entire state.

He’s doing an excellent job as an ambassador.

The 19-year-old former fifth-round draft pick is currently hitting the ball as well as he has over his two-year minor-league career with the San Diego Padres rookie-level team in the Arizona League.

Homza, of South High fame, is riding a 10-for-34 (.294) streak since July 22 and has reached base in 10 of his last 11 games.

His career average is .234 in 81 games.

Homza has collected seven RBIs, four runs, five walks and a .357 on-base percentage during this stretch.

The infielder-turned catcher has thrown out 10 baserunners in 12 games compared to seven in 19 games as a rookie.
