Last year, the University of Southern California inserted Anchorage’s Brandon Pili in the starting lineup as an emergency.

This year he’s earned the right to start on the defensive line.

The 6-foot-4, 325-pound sophomore was on the field early and often in USC’s season-opening 43-21 win over the University of Nevada Las Vegas in Los Angeles, California.

Pili, of Dimond High fame, record his first sack as well as his first tackle for loss in this his 10th career game for the Trojans.

He finished with four tackles, a half sack and 1.5 tackles for loss.

As a freshman he didn’t get on the field until his team’s sixth game, yet he still managed to earn All-Pac-12 honorable mention.
