Not normally one of the big hitters, McKinley Putnam of North Pole came up huge for the Valley City State University volleyball team in the conference opener.

The sophomore came off the bench to deliver a season-high seven kills and .455 attack percentage to key a four-set win over Dickinson State in Valley City, North Dakota.

Putnam, of North Pole High fame, finished 7-of-11 on attack chances with two hitting errors.

The win was Valley City’s sixth straight and bumped the Vikings to 1-0 in the North Star Athletic Association.

The 6-foot Alaskan ranks fifth on the team with 33 kills in seven matches.
