After back-to-back losses, the University of Minnesota hockey team turned to a familiar face in net.

Senior goalie Eric Schierhorn of Anchorage earned his third start of the season and delivered his first win, thanks to a 12-save shutout as the Big Ten Gophers won 3-0 over St. Lawrence of the ECAC in a nonleague game in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

It was his 12th career clean sheet to claim sole possession of third place on Minnesota’s all-time shutout list. He also moved into a tie for fifth all-time among goaltenders with 56 wins.

His last shutout came on Dec. 29 of last year in a 3-0 win over Army.

Once a staple face in the lineup, Schierhorn started a program-record 94 straight games. The NCAA record is 104.

This year he’s appeared in four of the team’s nine games, posting a 1-2 record with a career-best 1.60 goals against average and .925 save percentage.
