Furlong part of 4×400 relay that breaks 20-year school record
Soldotna’s Brenner Furlong was part of a school record at his first appearance at the NAIA Indoor Track & Field National Championships in Brookings, South Dakota.
The Dakota State University freshman ran on the men’s 4×400-meter relay team that placed 10th in the semifinals with a time of 3:16.87, which broke the school’s previous record of 3:21.70 that had stood since 1999.
The team narrowly missed advancing to Saturday’s finals.
A week ago, Furlong’s relay set a conference record at the North Star Athletic Association championships with a winning time of 3:22.05.
Furlong, of Soldotna High fame, also plays football for Dakota State and last fall scored his first touchdown after he blocked a punt and recovered the ball in the end zone.
A year ago, he won the 2018 Alaska Sports Hall of Fame’s Trajan Langdon Youth Award for leadership, sportsmanship and inspiration.
