Steffensen aids Mesa walk-off win that produces region title
Kenai’s Paul Steffensen played a key role in helping the Mesa Thunderbirds earn an 8-7 walk-off win over the GateWay Geckos in the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference.
With the win, Mesa punched its ticket to the NJCAA National Championships for the first time since 2014.
In the ninth inning, Steffensen singled to put the winning run in scoring position. Two batters later, Mesa walked off to clinch a postseason berth.
He finished the game 2-for-5 with a double. He batted .308 (4-for-13) in the three-game series.
Steffensen, of Kenai High fame, ranks third on the team with a .327 batting average, first with 16 doubles and second with four home runs.
Mesa will now head to Enid, Oklahoma, for the NJCAA National Tournament, which runs May 25 to June 1.
