Butcher slicing up competition (Soccer)
It’s fitting Carly Butcher lists Kobe Bryant as her sports hero because the Alaskan is a born scorer on the soccer field.
Entering her second season at the University of Southern Cal, Butcher is already one of her team’s top offensive threats. And she showed off her booming foot Friday night during an exhibition match in Los Angeles against the Mexican national team.
The magnificent midfielder from Anchorage provided USC’s first scoring opportunity in the 12th minute when she fired a shot on goal that was blocked by the Mexican keeper. USC wound up losing 2-0.
Last season Butcher bagged five goals and one assist for 11 points in 20 matches, helping USC advance to the third round of the NCAA Tournament and showing off the same skills that made her a Parade All-American at South High.
The 12th-ranked Trojans open the season for real Sunday at home against St. Johns.
