Newbould on the fast track (Running)
Turns out Brandon Newbould is pretty good at this marathon thing.
On just his fourth try, the 2000 Soldotna High School graduate won the 21th annual BayState Marathon last week in Lowell, Mass. He finished with a time of 2 hours, 27 minutes, 53 seconds or 5:39 per mile.
In April, the 27-year-old finished 80th in the Boston Marathon in 2:33:27.
In June, when he returned to Alaska with his wife to visit family, Newbould ran the 10-mile Run for the River in Soldotna. But a funny thing happened en route to the finish – former high school teammate Brent Knight nipped him at the end by five seconds.
Afterwards he joked about having an excuse.
“I was in pretty good shape for Boston, but I’ve been sitting on the couch since then,” Newbould told the Peninsula Clarion.
In all seriousness, though, Newbould is here to stay as one of the nation’s rising stars in marathon running.
