After compiling an incredible 170 victories en route to winning three Alaska state titles at Wasilla High School, Alan Bartelli struggled as a college underclassman.

Alan Bartelli

He lost more matches in his first two years at Boise State University (27) than he did during his entire prep career (20).

Now a junior, the Alaskan seems to be coming into his own.

Bartelli leads the Broncos with 11 victories this season, highlighted by last week’s five-win, sixth-place finish out of 22 125-pounders at the Las Vegas Invitational.

He helped Boise State—which also features Eli Hutchison of Soldotna—place fourth among 42 teams.

Bartelli recorded his 40th career win before dropping a tough 4-1 decision to fifth seed Frank Perrelli of Cornell, his second setback to Perrelli in the tournament.

Bartelli is second on the team with three pins, including the fastest (90 seconds).

Eli Hutchison

Meanwhile, the 141-pound Hutchison ranks fourth on the team in winning percentage (.833) with a 5-1 record, including one technical fall.

Hutchison was a four-time Alaska state champion and won an astronomical 193 matches at Skyview High School.
