Bell-Holter assists with historic upset (Basketball)

December 24, 2009

Oral Roberts University and its 6-foot-10 Alaskan are back at it again. For the third time this season, the Golden Eagles have knocked off a nationally ranked opponent. Last night it was No. 12 New Mexico, which fell from its unbeaten perch after a 75-66 loss in Tulsa, Okla. Freshman Damen Bell-Holter of Hydaburg did… Read more »

Pinch yourself, Kelsey, it’s real (Basketball)

December 23, 2009

It’s pretty obvious success hasn’t gone to Kelsey Griffin’s head. Despite developing into Alaska’s first lady of college basketball as an All-American candidate for the University of Nebraska, the 22-year-old senior sees herself as the same girl from Eagle River. She still craves Moose’s Tooth pizza. She still considers former Chugiak High all-star Alicia Adams… Read more »

‘Canes win No. 9 behind Bullock (Basketball)

December 22, 2009

Anchorage’s Sylvia Bullock controlled the backboards for the University of Miami last night against outmatched Cornell. The 6-foot-2 sophomore starter grabbed a game-high 8 rebounds as the Hurricanes gained a 45-22 advantage on the glass. Miami collected 25 offensive boards, with Bullock hauling in a game-high four. The Alaskan added 8 points, 3 assists, 2… Read more »

Best of ’09 includes Evans (Mixed Martial Arts)

AFC veteran Doug Evans of Anchorage enjoyed a pretty good year in 2009. He won three of four fights, improving his career MMA record to 9-5. And the only fight he didn’t win was among the best brawls of the year. His fight with Thierry Quenneville from Feb. 27 at the XMMA 7 Inferno in… Read more »

Harris part of ‘UK2K’ history (Basketball)

December 21, 2009

Ramon Harris has a flare for the dramatics. The University of Kentucky senior forward from Anchorage pumped in a season-high 9 points tonight to help the No. 3 Wildcats make history with an 88-44 drubbing of Drexel. The victory is No. 2,000 for the tradition-rich Wildcats, making Kentucky the most successful NCAA Division I basketball… Read more »

Griffin collects 30 in upset win (Basketball)

On a day when the spotlight was on her, Kelsey Griffin opted to shine some light on her University of Nebraska teammates. That’s because without them, the 6-foot-2 Alaskan said, she never would have dropped 30 points on the No. 5 team in the country. Griffin, of Chugiak High fame, made 14 of 19 shots… Read more »

Kuper linked to NFL history (Football)

December 13, 2009

When people bring up Brandon Marshall’s record-breaking performance Sunday afternoon in Indianapolis, they won’t be able to tell the story without mentioning offensive lineman Chris Kuper of Anchorage. It’s not necessarily because Kuper set up a big play or provided protection. It’s because after Marshall hauled in his NFL record 21st reception, he pitched the… Read more »

‘Real’ Winford returns to form (Basketball)

Even though it’s been several weeks since Eastern Washington University freshman Kevin Winford suffered a concussion, he still hasn’t been his old self. Until Saturday, that is. Winford, of Bartlett High fame, pumped in a season high 20 points and played his finest overall game in a 100-97 overtime victory over Seattle University. “It’s nice… Read more »

Harris helps Kentucky go 10-0 (Basketball)

December 12, 2009

His numbers didn’t jump off the page—they seldom do—but Anchorage’s Ramon Harris won again today. And that’s what matters. Harris, of West High fame, delivered six rebounds and four points in 15 minutes to help the No. 4 Wildcats beat up host Indiana 90-73 in a rivalry game that was televised nationally on CBS. Praised… Read more »
