The basketball team’s loss was the track team’s gain—and now Ryan Hanley in an All-American.

Hanley, of Dimond High fame, is probably better known in Alaska as a hoops player than a runner, but he’s made his name at the Colorado School of Mines in indoor track.

The versatile Alaskan earned All-American honors as part of the distance medley relay that placed fifth at the NCAA Division II Indoor Championships this weekend in Albuquerque, N.M.

Hanley, a freshman, ran the second leg of the relay that featured legs of 400, 800, 1,200 and 1,600 meters.

At the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference indoor meet before the national championships, he earned second team all-conference honors in the 800 and was part of the distance medley relay that earned third team all-conference recognition.

In high school, Hanley won an 800 state title in outdoor track in addition to a state championship on the hardwood, where he earned Gatorade Player of the Year honors.
