Ray Shafer

Remember Ray Schafer, the 7-footer from Wasilla that went on to play for the University of Oregon?

Well, he’s now in Japan. And he’s playing like an all-star.

Schafer, who led the Warriors to the 2003 ASAA state title game against Bartlett and future pros Mario Chalmers and Zack Bowman, is the starting center for Shiga Lakestars of Japan’s second division.

Last night he bagged 21 points in an 85-84 loss to Fukuoka Rizing in a battle for second place. Schafer made 8 of 11 shots and 5 of 10 free throws in 30 minutes of action.

The Alaskan is averaging 14.2 points and 6.8 rebounds in 42 games this season. He is shooting 62 percent from inside the arc, although he needs work on his foul shots (49 percent).
