Jordan Clarke of Anchorage heaved the shot put 60 feet today for the first time in his NCAA career, helping the Arizona State University freshman finish fifth at the 52nd annual Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif.

Clarke, of Bartlett High fame, was the lone college competitor in the men’s invitational shot put. He responded with a season-best toss of 60 feet, 1 inch.

The 6-foot-4 Alaskan redshirted last year, although he didn’t take the year off.

Clarke participated in the U.S. Outdoor Championships and won the junior shot put title with a throw of 67-1½. He also represented Uncle Sam at the Pan-American Junior Championships and won a silver medal with a toss of 65-6¼.

Arizona State, which also features Anchorage sprinter Andrea Cook, will be back on the track this weekend at the Sun Devil Open.
