Alana Clooten’s bid to return to the NCAA Division I Track and Field Championships has fallen short.

The 23-year-old Georgia Tech senior from Fairbanks sputtered in the women’s hammer throw during the Preliminary Round East Meet in Greensboro, N.C., finishing 26th out of 46 competitors. The top 12 advanced to Nationals.

It was one of the worst performances for Clooten, the reigning Atlantic Coast Conference champion. She finished with a mark of 176 feet, 5 inches – way below her season best of 193-4.

Clooten, of Lathrop High fame, has a personal-best mark of 194-5. In 2009, she qualified for the NCAA Championships and was named to the All-ACC Academic Team.
