Chalmers to remain with Miami Heat (Basketball)
Anchorage’s Mario Chalmers is off the free-agent market.
The 24-year-old NBA point guard out of the University of Kansas has reportedly been told by the Miami Heat that the team will pick up the option for a third year from his rookie contract.
Chalmers, of Bartlett High fame, has started 104 of 155 career games with the Heat, a two-time playoff team under his watch.
The 6-foot-1 playmaker enters his third season with career averages of 8.6 points, 4.2 assists, 2.3 rebounds and 1.6 steals per game.
Last season, though, the Alaskan suffered a sophomore slump, losing his starting job for the first time in his career in addition to going to the disabled list for the first time. As a result, his numbers were down across the board from his NBA All-Rookie Team season.
But the Heat believe in Chalmers, who they acquired in a draft-day trade with the Minnesota Timberwolves in 2008.
Chalmers, who earned $756,000 last season, is now guaranteed $854,000 for this coming season.
