Bingham chilling, winning, in Europe (Basketball)
Anchorage’s Dorena Bingham is in France right now to help Team USA prepare for the inaugural FIBA Under-17 World Championships that begins Friday.
Bingham, of East High fame, is an assistant coach with the girls U-17 national team based on her remarkable resume at the high school and AAU levels. She was also on the bench of the victorious West squad that won the McDonald’s All-American game in March.
So far, her trip has included stops in France and Spain.
“Man it’s great here,” she told me. “We were in Spain during the World Cup. It was crazy.”
While in Spain, Team USA won a round-robin, pre-championship tournament capped by a 60-51 win over the host country.
Now the team has arrived in France for the World Championships. The Americans are in Group A featuring Canada, Japan, Russia, Turkey and France. Group B includes Argentina, Australia, Belgium, China, Mali and Spain.
Team USA hits the court Friday morning against France.
“I am now in Rodez, France, and will be in Toulousse when the Tour de France comes through,” Bingham said. “It doesn’t get any better than this.”
