Fenumiai picks sport, school next choice (Softball)
The best high school softball player in Alaska for the last two years will stick with that sport in college.
But it wasn’t a slam-dunk decision for Brittany Fenumiai of Juneau.
She’s an all-state basketball player who finished runner-up for Class 4A Girls Player-of-the-Year honors last season, and there were college offers for that sport, too.
In the end, however, the diamond won over the hardwood.
“My original plan was to go play basketball … my heart was always with basketball because I loved it so much,” she told me. “But this past softball season, I just loved it. Wow, I missed it so much. I had a change of heart.”
Her college choice is the next decision.
Fenumiai, a two-time Gatorade Alaska Player of the Year, has offers from Youngstown State, a D1 school in Ohio, and Hawaii Pacific, a D2 school in Honolulu.
Soon she will visit Hawaii Pacific, where her older sister Nicole plans to play basketball this coming season.
“I’m going to Honolulu in a week to check out the campus and stuff,” said Fenumiai, who will also participate in a tryout for possible scholarship money.
