Alaskans on nationally ranked teams (Soccer)

After dropping out of the NCAA Division I women’s soccer top 25 last week, the University of Southern California bounced back tonight with a 1-0 win over TCU.
And although Anchorage’s Carly Butcher didn’t score, she got pretty close.
Butcher, a starting midfielder, fired two shots on goal, including a rocket that was tipped over the bar by the goalkeeper in the first half.
The Women of Troy were just knocking on the door of the national rankings, listed as the first team under also receiving votes.

Speaking of national rankings, No. 20 Wisconsin, featuring Eagle River’s terrific twin tandem of Alev Kelter and Derya Kelter, lost 1-0 to No. 3 UCLA tonight.
Alev Kelter, a starting midfielder, delivered one shot on goal and issued two fouls.
The sophomore had a scoring opportunity in the first half when she went up to head the ball, but the UCLA keeper grabbed it before Kelter could connect.

Derya Kelter came on as a substitute and committed one foul.
Out west, No. 22 San Diego and Anchorage’s Maggie McGuire beat Arizona 4-1 tonight.
The sophomore forward bagged one goal in 14 games as a freshman.
Another Alaskan on a nationally ranked NCAA is Anchorage’s Megan Murphy, a sophomore at No. 24 Washington State.

Murphy is a sophomore midfielder who went from the practice squad to the pitch.
