The University of Denver men’s swim team is one of the best in the country and Caleb Severns of Fairbanks is a big reason why.

The Pioneers came in at No. 3 in the most recent CSCAA Mid-Major Division I Swimming Poll. Navy was No. 1 and Columbia No. 2.

Severns, of Lathrop High fame, is a senior and one of the best backstroke swimmers on the team.

The 6-foot-1 senior also leads off the 200 medley relay and competes in the grueling 200 individual medley.

But his bread and butter is the backstroke.

During a recent meet against the University of Wyoming, the former Alaska state champion turned in times of 52.51 in the 100 and 1:54.12 in the 200.

As a junior at last season’s Sun Belt Conference Championships, Severns established personal-best times in both backstroke events – 50.37 and 1:48.28.
