Engel to sign with Boise State (Basketball)
When reigning player-of-the-year Keiahnna Engel of Anchorage visited Boise State University on a recruiting trip in September, she got the star treatment.
She got hooked up with T-shirts and shorts. She hung out with the women’s basketball team. She watched a football game from the student section.
It was a head-turning, heart-pounding campus experience she will never forget.
In fact, she wants to go back.
“It kind of felt like home,” she told me.
Engel, of Dimond High fame, said she will sign a letter of intent with the Boise State Broncos during this week’s NCAA Early Signing Period.
“I’m ready to sign that paper and say I’m done,” she said. “My senior year feels way better now; less stressed.”
The 5-foot-7 all-state guard averaged 21 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals as a junior.
Engel was recruited by other NCAA DI schools such as Hawaii, Seattle, Portland State and Cal Irvine before siding with Boise State of the Western Athletic Conference.
“When I went to visit I really connected well with the coaches and the girls,” she said. “They kept it real with me. They told me the truth, like, how if I go there that I could probably get some playing time but I would still have to put work in.”
One of the highlights of her trip was attending the Boise State-Oregon State football game.
“I got to stand on the side while the football team ran out with the horse and everything,” Engel said. “That atmosphere was crazy. They had it planned out perfectly. The people there were amazing.”
With her college plans in her pocket, she can concentrate on her final season at Dimond.
“I can focus on getting a state title because I really want one,” Engel said. “I need one.”
