Anchorage’s Adrina LaVern went from zero to hero for Midland University overnight.

That is, she went from playing zero minutes to playing the role of hero after scoring 19 points and grabbing 7 rebounds in her college debut. It came in a 62-50 NAIA win over College of St. Mary in the Midland Classic in Fremont, Neb.

LaVern, of West High fame, came off the bench to sink 7 of 13 shots from the field and 4 of 7 from the line. She also earned a place on the all-tournament team.

Not bad for a player who didn’t even get off the bench the night before.

“I’m all smiles right now,” LaVern told the Fremont Tribune. “I’ve never been so happy in my entire life. Being from Alaska it’s really a new experience. I love it.”

Her breakout performance was no surprise to Midland coach Joanne Bracker.

“She’s a multi-dimensional player,” the coach told the newspaper. “She can step out and shoot the 3 and she’s strong inside. I thought she really gave us a boost.”

She got her chance to shine after a starter got into foul trouble.

“I didn’t expect to get that much playing time,” LaVern said. “There are a lot of girls who are a lot more talented than I am but I’m excited and happy I was in there.”
