Eastern Washington University basketball coach Kirk Earlywine has given sophomore guard Kevin Winford of Anchorage the green light this season.

The University of Idaho tried to red light him today, but it didn’t work.

Winford was unstoppable.

The former Alaska player of the year pumped in a career-high 28 points and drained 8 of 16 3-pointers to set school records for makes and attempts.

Unfortunately, his breakout performance came in a losing effort. Idaho won 70-60 despite blowing a 17-point second half lead. Behind Winford’s hot hand, EWU drew even at 60 before fading down the stretch.

Winford, of Bartlett High fame, broke the previous 3-point school record of seven, set on 11 different occasions by five different players.

His previous career high for points was 20 set twice last season.
