Doron Perkins

Defending Euroleague champion Barcelona today proved too much for Maccabi Tel Aviv and Doron Perkins of Anchorage in the first game of group play in the Top 16 playoffs.

The Spanish power prevailed 81-71 at home, despite a near double-double by Perkins.

The former Bartlett High star pumped in 13 points, grabbed 8 rebounds and handed off 3 assists in 25 minutes before fouling out.

Tel Aviv is one of the favorites to advance from group play after winning nine of 10 games during the regular season. Each four-team group features a home-and-home, with the top two marching onto the elite eight.

Perkins, a 6-foot-2 point guard, is averaging 9.1 points, 5.3 rebounds and 3.2 assists in 11 Euroleague games. He also has a 2 to 1 assist-to-turnover.

Brad Oleson

The other Euroleague player from Alaska in the Top 16 playoffs is Brad Oleson of North Pole, a shooting guard for reigning Spanish League champion Caja Laboral.

Oleson, of UAF fame, came off the bench to deliver 3 points, 1 rebound and 1 steal in 17 minutes.

The 6-foot-3 shooting guard had started most of the season.

In 11 Euroleague games, Oleson is averaging 7.5 points, 2.6 rebounds and 1.3 assists.

Anchorage’s Trajan Langdon of Russian juggernaut CSKA Moscow failed to advance beyond the first stage of group play, the first time in his six seasons with the club.
