Bartelli wins, loses in clutch (Wrestling)
He giveth and he taketh away.
Boise State University senior wrestler Alan Bartelli experienced it first hand when he pulled out a last-second victory one day and dropped a tough down-to-the-wire decision two days later.
So is life is the world of college wrestling.
Bartelli, of Wasilla High fame, is the No. 14 ranked 125-pounder in NCAA D1 and has won 14 of 21 matches this season. His career record is 67-53.
Few wins were more exciting than his 3-1 decision over Tyler Iwanura of Cal-State Bakersfield in which Bartelli scored the winning, two-point takedown with four seconds left in overtime.
Two nights later on Senior Night against Utah Valley University, Bartelli lost 3-2 to No. 13 Ben Kjar in a match that came down to the wire.
After building a 1-0 lead after two periods, Bartelli fell behind 3-1 as Kjar scored an escape and take down early in the third. The Alaska champion managed to escape with 1:10 remaining in the third but was unable to score a takedown as time expired.
Ninth-ranked Boise State completed a near perfect record against Pac-10 Conference competition this season and finished their conference schedule without a Pac-10 loss for the third consecutive season. The only blemish was an 18-18 tie against Oregon State.
Since the start of the 2007-08 season Boise State is 27-1-1.
