Engel’s busy All-Star Saturday (Basketball)

In the movies, Clark Kent goes into a phone booth and transforms into Superman.

Anchorage prep star Keiahnna Engel will be changing uniforms Saturday when she goes from the Big C Relays at The Dome to the Alaska Association of Basketball Coaches Senior All-Star Game at Colony.

And given the time crunch between the last event at the track meet and the tip off for the hoops game, she probably will have to change in the car on the drive to the Valley.

“I think my dad is going to drive,” she told me with a laugh.

Engel, of Dimond High fame, is a multi-sport star who excels most in basketball. The 5-foot-8 guard is a two-time Class 4A Girls Player of the Year who has already signed with Boise State University.

With all the pressure off, her focus at the all-star game will be on laughs more than layups.

“I just want to have fun,” she said. “My thing is I want to set the assist record. I could care less about points.”

She could also care less about trying to impress anybody.

“Everyone should know who I am,” she said. “They’ve seen me play for four years.”

Engel – the only player at the state tournament to rank in the top three in points (14.3), rebounds (10.7) and assists (4.3) – is happy her final high school game is the Senior All-Star Game, which returns after nearly 20 years.

“I think it’s cool they brought it back,” Engel said. “It’s a nice way to showcase the best talent in the state. It’s nice to get that reward.”

Engel is one of three girls voted player of the year to play in the Senior All-Star Game, joining Nicole Smith of 3A Barrow and Jesse Ellis of 2A Skagway.
