Anchorage relief pitcher Corey Madden is one step closer toward his goal of reaching the major leagues.

The 27-year-old righty was promoted this spring to Class AA with the Jacksonville Suns, an affiliate for the Florida Marlins. Last summer he pitched for the Class A+ Jupiter Hammerheads.

Madden, of East High fame, is entering his sixth professional season after graduating from Saint Mary’s College of California in 2006.

The 6-foot-1, 195-pounder has already pitched for his new club, throwing a scoreless ninth inning in a 5-1 loss on opening day last night.

For his minor league career, Madden has pitched in 147 games and compiled a 14-9 record with a 3.09 ERA and 12 saves.

He has struck out 260 batters in 210 innings while allowing 167 hits and 79 walks.
