Joe Newby

Fresh off the DL, Soldotna pitcher Joe Newby picked up right where he left off before his arm injury.

The right-handed starter for the Double-A Chattanooga Lookouts – a Dodgers affiliate – tossed five strong innings during a 3-0 loss in his first appearance of the young season.

Newby, of SoHi fame, allowed just four hits and one run. He struck out four and walked none.

His ERA is 1.80.

The 29-year-old has been a professional pitcher since 2004 after signing by the Oakland A’s as an undrafted free agent out of the Colorado State University-Pueblo. He has gone as far as Triple-A Tacoma.

Last season he played in the Independent League and later pitched for Puerto Rico in the Caribbean Series. He threw in two of three victories, including a start against eventual champion Mexico.
