After a couple seasons at running back for Saint John’s University, Dustin Baxter of Fairbanks is moving to defense.

He will contend for a starting linebacker job at the D3 school in Minnesota.

Baxter, of West Valley fame, is an All-American wrestler and one of the few two-sport college athletes from Alaska.

He didn’t play football last season but he has seen action in 13 career games, including nine during his sophomore season.

The Johnnies are ranked No. 25 in the D3football.com Preseason Top 25 poll.

They were ranked ninth in The Sporting News and No. 21 in the USA Today polls released earlier this summer.

Saint John’s is coached by the legendary John Gagliardi, who begins his record 63rd season overall and 59th season at SJU this fall with a 478-129-11 career record.

The team opens the season Sept. 3 against Northwestern.
