Garness in the mix at Southern Cal (Football)
David Garness of Anchorage kicked off his football career at the University of Southern California this weekend with his first official practice.
The 6-foot-5, 290-pound offensive lineman will compete for the starting job at right tackle with sophomore Kevin Graf, although Graf missed this year’s spring practice while recuperating from a 2010 shoulder injury.
Graf is probably the guy but it’ll depend on his ability to stay healthy. Even still, nothing is set in stone at a place like Southern Cal.
Garness, of Bartlett High fame, is a junior transfer from City College of San Francisco, which he led to a 10-1 record and a trip to the CCCAA championship game.
He is celebrated for his toughness and durability, having never missed a practice in his life.
Last season his accolades included Super Prep JUCO Top 100, Rivals JUCO Top 50, JC Athletic Bureau All-Region I first team and All-NorCal Conference first team.
At Southern Cal, Garness will likely get run at both left tackle and right tackle.
