Chalmers still clutch in KU uniform (Basketball)
It was déjà vu all over again.
Three years after Anchorage’s Mario Chalmers helped the University of Kansas win the NCAA title with an overtime-forcing 3-pointer, he was at it again during the ‘Legends of the Phog’ exhibition game involving past players.
The alumni game ended in a tie, and fittingly Chalmers made a big 3 at the end.
NBA star Paul Pierce had put his team up 111-108 with five seconds left, setting up one final play.
Fans chanted “Mar-i-o, Mar-i-o” during a timeout, pleading for the playmaker from Alaska to duplicate his heroics against the University of Memphis in the 2008 national championship game.
He sent them home happy.
Chalmers, of Bartlett High fame, took the ball near halfcourt, drove toward the top of the key and swished a game-tying 3 with less than a second left – reminiscent to his shot against Memphis.
“Everybody remembers his championship shot. It was just a replay,” Pierce said. “I said to Mario, ‘That’s the way it’s supposed to end.’ ”
