Kelly Cobb

Oops, Kelly Cobb did it again.

The Duke University freshman soccer player from Eagle River delivered another game-winning goal, this time coming in a 1-0 win over Virginia Tech in the quarterfinals of the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship tournament in Durham, N.C.

It was the first tournament victory since 2005 for Duke, which advanced to the semifinals against Wake Forest in a battle of two of the NCAA’s top five women’s teams. Duke is ranked No. 4, Wake No. 5.

Cobb, of Chugiak High fame, scored the only goal of today’s game in the third minute after the Blue Devils peppered the VT goalkeeper with a barrage of shots.

Finally, after a teammate’s initial shot was blocked Laura Weinberg corralled a loose ball and tapped a pass to Cobb who punched it inside the left post for her sixth game winner of the season.

“I think we know what is on the line,” Cobb told the school’s website. “The regular season is done and we are into tournament time. It is either win or go home. We came out to win today and I think it showed with the character of the players we have on this team – we came out hard.”

It was Cobb’s 10th goal of the season, tying the school’s freshman record.

It was also her 27th point on the season, also matching the school’s freshman record.

Her six game winners is No. 3 on the Duke all-time list and her 70 shots on the season is No. 10.
