Ferrin, Chapman U. make history (Volleyball)

It was 1994 and the Chapman University volleyball team was coming off one of its best seasons in school history, winning 23 matches at the NCAA D3 level.

That year the Orange, Calif., school moved up to D2 and fans probably figured another 20-win season was around the corner.

But it didn’t happen for 17 years.

The spell was finally broken by this year’s team, which features junior starter Kate Ferrin of Anchorage and reached the 20-win plateau for the first time since 1994 with a four-set win over UC Santa Cruz.

“This is a huge milestone,” Ferrin told me.

Ferrin, of Grace Christian fame, leads the team in kills (369) and blocks (36). She is a junior middle blocker who earned All-America honors last season.

Chapman is now 20-8 on the season, with the majority of its losses coming against ranked teams.

“We have three matches left and hopefully will receive a bid for playoffs,” she said.
