Sherman-Newsome at JC in Texas (Basketball)

Rather than going to a prep school like he originally planned, Anchorage’s Damon Sherman-Newsome decided to crossover and go a junior college instead.

The 6-foot-5 all-state guard is at Angelina College in Texas, where he immediately learned about bigger, faster and stronger competition at the next level.

“Everyone at your position is your size or bigger, and just as fast,” he told me.

Sherman-Newsome, of Bartlett High fame, has managed to pick up where he left off in Alaska. He started both preseason games for Angelina College, averaging 12.5 points and 5 assists.

“The biggest adjustment so far has been getting stronger and having to play hard all the time,” he said. “I like it for the most part.”

Sherman-Newsome’s path to the JC ranks is unusual in the sense that most players go that route because they are poor students.

He is the opposite – a 3.8 student with high test scores.

The playmaker from Alaska is looking to land with a NCAA D1 squad and he’s already got the attention of a few, including Central Michigan, said his dad Truman Newsome Jr.

“He has schools coming to watch his practices,” his dad said. “Central has told him that he would excel at their program.”
