A year after sitting out as a redshirt, Randy Hanson of Bethel is making up for lost time with the University of Minnesota wresting team.

The freshman won four of six matches to work his way through the consolation bracket en route to a fourth-place in the 133-pound weight class at the recent Bison Open in North Dakota.

He dropped a 5-3 decision in the first round to North Dakota State University’s Justin Solberg, a senior with nearly 50 career victories.

Undaunted, Hanson rattled off four straight wins highlighted by a 5-2 triumph over – guess who? – Justin Solberg.

The revenge win as well as the marathon match schedule took its toll on Hanson, who was beaten by teammate Thane Antczak by a 14-4 major decision in the consolation title match.

Still, the loss couldn’t take the shine off his promising performance.
