You will hear plenty of bad news out of the border town Laredo, Texas.

But here’s a good story: Anchorage’s Shane Rinner is lifting the Texas A&M International men’s basketball program to new heights.

The third-year head coach has led the NCAA D2 Dustdevils to back-to-back Heartland Conference championships.

Even more, the former UAA assistant has his 21-6 club ranked No. 8 in the Southcentral Region for the first time in school history.

“Being ranked regionally is a big deal and we’re the only Heartland team to be ranked that high,” Rinner told the school’s website. “It’s just another way to validate all of the hard work and effort our team has put in this season.”

Rinner, of ACS fame, is already the school’s all-time coaching wins leader with 54 victories in 85 games.
