Seward’s Ryan O’Leary made history for the University of Wyoming men’s swim team at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships in Los Angeles.

Swimming second on the 800-yard freestyle relay, the fast freshman helped the Cowboys squad win gold with a championship record time of 6:31.62, which is a school record and good enough for an NCAA B qualifying time.

“Our 800 freestyle relay was just awesome,” Wyoming coach Tom Johnson told the team’s website. “Ryan had a really nice swim to extend the lead for us.”

Two more Alaskans swimming for Wyoming, Jeff Frey of Wasilla and Nick Rutecki of Juneau, also enjoyed a historic run in the water.

They made up half of the 200 medley relay team that placed second in the meet with a school-record time of 1:28.40, quick enough to give them an NCAA B cut time.
