Hutchison wins Olympic Trials tune-up [Wrestling]

Soldotna’s Michaela Hutchison won her weight class for the second straight year at the Women’s University Nationals over the weekend in Oklahoma City.

The four-time All-American for Oklahoma City University defeated Sarah Hildebrandt of Granger, Ind., in the finals, 1-0, 1-0 at 121 pounds.

Hutchison, of Skyview High fame, is a three-time WCWA women’s college national champion.

With the win, Hutchison qualified for the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team Trials, set for April 21-22 in Iowa City.

Melissa Apodaca

Another Alaskan wrestler, Melissa Apodaca of Chugiak, also made finals but was denied an automatic berth to the Olympic Trials.

Apodaca dropped a 3-1, 6-0 decision at 138 pounds to Trinity Plessinger of Colorado Springs in the gold medal match.

Apodaca, a sophomore at Northern Michigan University, came back to pin Alli Ragan of Carbondale, Ill., in just 49 seconds in the true second place match.
