In desperate need of a victory to stay alive in the JUCO World Series, Western Nevada College played its ace.

Sophomore pitcher Dylan Baker of Juneau delivered another awesome outing, striking out 10 and shutting down the Cisco Wranglers in a 9-2 win in Grand Junction, Colo.

Baker (13-0) blanked the Wranglers for five innings before giving up a two-run bomb. It was his only blemish in an otherwise spotless performance.

“We had the best pitcher in junior college baseball pitching for us today, and that helped,” WNC Coach D.J. Whittemore told the Nevada Appeal newspaper. “He’s been our workhorse all year.”

The victory was Western Nevada College’s 48th of the season, matching the school record set in 2009.

The team can go for the record outright later today.

Baker is projected to go in the first or second round of next month’s Major League Baseball Draft.
