Aztecs taking well to Overbaugh [Football]
When San Diego State University went looking for a long snapper, their search took them all the way to Alaska.
Jeff Overbaugh of Anchorage was their man.
“You only have one scholarship for that spot, so you better get it right,” SDSU special teams coach Kevin McGarry told the San Diego Union-Tribune. “As of now, I think we were right. We made a good choice.”
Overbaugh, of Service High fame, is slated to be the starting long snapper for Saturday’s season opener against the University of Washington in Seattle.
The 6-foot-2, 240-pound true freshman is already fitting in with his team teammates.
“He’s one of the funniest kids I’ve ever met,” SDSU punter told the newspaper. “He brings a lot of joy to the special teams unit. If a practice is going poorly, he can make you laugh and turn things around.”
Overbaugh is also making his position coach happy.
“He’s an interesting kid,” McGarry said. “Most people would say he’s just a long snapper. But he’s a real competitive kid. He’s serious about it. … He really enjoys football, and all he’s going to do is long snap. But he’s into it like he’s out there for every snap.”
