Early on, University of Denver women’s soccer coach Jeff Hooker saw something special in goalkeeper Lara Campbell of Anchorage.

“Her composure and understanding of the game allowed her to win the position, and step right in as a freshman,” he told me.

His evaluation proved spot on.

Campbell, of South High fame, has become one of the school’s greatest goalies and yesterday tied the school record for most career wins in Denver’s 4-0 victory over UC Irvine to win the Denver Invitational.

Her record improved to 50-12-3.

“In her four years she has served as a great leader for us,” Hooker said. “Her ability to read and react to the game is something that she had as a freshman, but has really come to light in recent seasons.

“She also has the ability to be in the right position at the right time to make some key saves.”

Campbell has been money this year, recording a 5-1-1 record while allowing just four goals in 604 minutes.

“Lara has always had the athletic ability to play the position,” Hooker said. “Her leadership has grown each year, which has really helped our squad over the years.

“Lara’s role wearing the captain’s armband this year is a result of leadership on and off the field. She is a great student, has a tremendous work rate, is an outstanding teammate and has a knack for being a good leader; people follow her.”
