Hutchison, Apodaca lose World berths [Wrestling]
A pair of Alaska women over the weekend came up just short in their bid to compete on Team USA at next month’s Women’s World Championships later in Canada.
Soldotna’s Michaela Hutchison and Chugiak’s Melissa Apodaca each finished fourth in their respective weight classes during competition Saturday in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Hutchison, a 2008 graduate of Skyview High, lost her third-place match at 121 pounds to Katerina Perez of King.
She lost the first round 2-0 and was winning the second period 4-1 before she got pinned.
Hutchison was a three-time national champion at Oklahoma City University, where she compiled a 140-18 career record.
Apodaca, a 2008 graduate of Chugiak High, dropped a 1-0, 1-0 decision to Audrey Morehouse of Oklahoma City in her third-place match.
Apodaca is a former Arctic Winter Games champion in freestyle and was a four-time girls Alaska state champ. She attends Northern Michigan University.
