Diamondbacks buy rights to Way [Baseball]
The path to major league baseball was cleared for Sitka’s Matt Way after the Arizona Diamondbacks purchased his rights from the Laredo Lemurs of the American Association.
The 25-year-old starting southpaw was scheduled for a little R&R in Australia after pitching well in 2012, his first full season since 2009.
But now he’s in the Caribbean League, throwing for Tigres del Licey of the Dominican Republic.
He started his first game earlier this week, lasting only three innings.
It’s about the only time the guy didn’t pitch well this year.
It all began in Laredo, Texas, where he was an all-star after going 10-7 with six complete games and a 3.98 ERA in 21 games. He also struck out 112 in 128 innings.
Then he went to New York, where he went 4-1 and helped the Long Island Ducks win the Atlantic League championship.
Way was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in the fifth round of the 2009 Amateur Draft. He pitched two seasons in the minors, going 7-5 with a 3.90 ERA before injuries kept him off the field in 2010 and 2009.
