Ferrin in the middle of it at Chapman [Volleyball]
It seems fitting that the middle blocker would be in the middle of something special at Chapman University in Orange, Calif.
A year after leading Chapman to its first 20-win season in 17 years, Anchorage’s Kate Ferrin has helped the team crack the NCAA D3 Top 25 for the first time in school history.
“This is huge,” Ferrin told me. “We are playing at a level we never expected.”
Chapman [22-5] is ranked No. 23 nationally after debuting at No. 25 two weeks ago.
The senior All-American from Alaska is a big reason why the team is getting so much attention.
Ferrin, of Grace Christian fame, has 244 kills this season thanks to a career-high hitting percentage of .346, which ranks No. 2 in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and No. 35 among all D3 players.
She is also just 16 kills from reaching the 1,000 mark for her career. Look for her to eclipse that milestone at the SCIAC Championships this weekend.
Yet don’t look for her to be selfish to get it.
“We aren’t a team of one player,” Ferrin said. “Our team is much more balanced this year. Some people think that their senior year is all about being the star, but I couldn’t be happier with where I stand on the team. We are truly a force to be reckoned with.”
