Sherman-Newsome keys Colgate win [Basketball]
Anchorage’s Damon Sherman-Newsome was in the right place at the right time to help Colgate University edge Coppin State 88-84 in a Maui Invitational regional game in New York.
With his team nursing a two-point cushion with 3 seconds left, the 6-foot-5 guard stole the ball and then iced the game with a pair of free throws.
He finished with 13 points, matching his career high set the previous night against Elon.
Sherman-Newsome, of Bartlett High fame, is averaging 8 points in his first six games in a Colgate uniform.
On this night he made a pair of 3-pointers and sank 7-of-8 free throws. In the final minute alone he collected three points, one assist and one steal.
Against Elon, Sherman-Newsome went 4-of-8 from the floor and 4-of-5 from the foul line.
